Recently, i've discovered a Japanese TV drama that i had enjoyed very much. The drama is" about a retired police detective now working as a chef and running as a private investigator agency with his daughter. The aim of the PI agency is helping customer 'searching for the food with memories'. It might seems strange, might i totally understand what were the customer searching for in the movie.
It is not just food they are searching for, they were searching for answer, for that sweet moment or that precious memories associated with the food they had during that period. It started with the ex-husband's pork chop, then the wife's udon noodles, continued with father's burger and childhood spaghetti for grandfather whom suffered from Alzheimer.
When we were running the restaurant 5+ years back in Kuala Lumpur, we were glad and amazed to know how the food we served, managed to trigger a happy memories with the customers. More than of then customers will share with us how the bowl of soup reminded them of the good time they had with their families when they were kids or how a bowl of pasta reminded them of their vacation time. We were truly humbled about this.
For a lot of others, food might be just a sustenance, a mean to go on with daily life, a way to keep moving and nothing more. However, for a lot of us, for me at least, food is more than that. Food is about bringing strangers together to the dinner table, it is about dinner time with family members and celebrations.
Fast tracked to 5 years, here in Melbourne, food has becoming more important for us. A lot of time, when we missed our friends and families, we will cook the food that associate with them. There is nothing too difficult or too hard for us trying to reproduce the taste of the food we love. We've tried many things along the way, trying, tasting, experimenting and overall it's not too bad. One thing may sounded cliche, but one most important ingredients in all the food we cherished were cooked with tender-loving-care. Nothing more my friends, but TLC is the most important ingredients in all cooking to trigger that sweet memories.
One of the must-have item in our fridge is the good old 'Sambal Belacan'. Growing up, we had sambal belacan with almost anything. Nasi Lemak, fried mee-hoon, lam-mee, nasi goreng and the list goes on and on. It was the nasi lemak in the office, mom's breakfast fried mee hoon,
grandma's birthday celeration noodles, nasi goreng in the sunday
afternoon. All wonderful memories. To get your hands on some sambal jars, message us.
